The Kitchen - In the Beginning

When we first attended the showing for our house, we took pictures and kept it in a folder so that we can review what it looked like and go over the pros and cons of each property that we were looking at with our realtor. House hunting can be a daunting and confusing process so keeping an organized file of each home we viewed, allowed us to go back and refresh our memories and compare each house at our leisure. Here are the walk-through pictures we took when we first viewed the property.

Here's the initial view of the kitchen. Even with the light on, it was still dark even during day time. The base cabinets on the right side were shallow and the drawers were narrow as well. We couldn't really fit much in the drawers except for a very small Ikea drawer organizer while the rest were just a free for all mess. The corner base cabinet on the left of the stove had a lazy susan inside but the lack of light makes finding things difficult. The countertops and backsplash were laminate and the sink section, I later found out had severe water damage due to the incorrect installation of the sink. The wall cabinets were also 30" tall which yielded a wasted space above it that really only collected dust. The wall cabinets were also shallow so it really barely fit our dishes and glassware. The peninsula (right base cabinets) had an opening which made it accessible from the dining room. The floors were all stick on laminate which weren't all exactly aligned. There's also a damaged section by the stove where it dips. I later found out that the sub-floor was gouged by something that caused the dip.

Here's an odd space by the fridge. As you can see, from this pic and the previous pic, the fridge is too big for this kitchen. It sticks out way past the counter and also too wide where it's starting to block the only functional window. It's also not that obvious in this picture but the window trim is slanted down. I also later found out that the drywall behind the fridge was forced in (uneven framing) so it had a long, bowed crack that they haphazardly spackled. The window on the left side isn't really functional since it opened up to the family room. It was left there even after the original owner added an extension to the exterior to convert into a family room.

Here's a better view of the right base cabinets and the opening above it. The backsplash was basically made of half inch OSB with laminate on it. The backsplash was like that all around so it also ate up a bit of much precious counter space. We'll talk about the ugly blue carpet on the other project posts.

Another view of the kitchen opening, from the dining room/living room. As you can see, the opening was low so there were plenty of times where someone would hit their head while trying to reach in and grab something from the counter. From this view, you can also see the baseboard heat which formed a shape of an 'L' from the visible wall and turns to the side of the fridge.

So that's the summary of what we started with. As you can see, the kitchen is small but has a lot of potential. It's challenging to renovate while minimizing the impact on our daily routines.
