Weather Seal Project

With the cold January weather, we were able to start identifying the problem areas that we needed to weather seal to keep any drafts from coming in to the house. After making a list of what items we needed, it was time to hit the local hardware store and gather the stuff that we needed.

We picked up some some foam pipe insulation for the exposed heater pipes and help keep the hot water heat from dissipating. I also needed it to stop the banging noise that the pipes make every time the pump stops and causes one of the pipes to hit against the floor joist.

Also picked up some window privacy film to give us some privacy for the windows that we didn't want to install blinds on. Supposedly, the film also helps increase the efficiency rating of the window pane so that was an added benefit.

A rubber foam weather seal was needed for the family room's exterior door. The wood seem to have warped from being exposed to the elements and had a slight gap that was letting the cold air in. Another set was used for the attic to help seal the hatch door and keep the heat from escaping.

Foam outlet and switch sealers were also added to help keep any drafts from coming in from the power switches and outlets.

I bought a door sweep for the door in the garage that leads to the basement. I found out later that I couldn't use it but I saved it for later just in case something else comes up where I may need it.

Last but not least, I bought garage door weatherstripping to seal the garage door. The garage was basically as cold as the outside of the house due to the massive gaps between the garage door and the frame.

A little bit of elbow grease with some nails and a hammer significantly helped keep the temperature more bearable in the garage.

Looking forward to a smaller heating bill next time around after I install the rest of the weather sealants.
