Less than half an hour after I laid down some floor protection covers on the recently refinished floors, the delivery for our living room set arrived. I was a little worried because the floor refinishing was completed earlier today and I didn't want the finish to get ruined by the new furniture. Little did I know, that I had a (literal) bigger problem that I'll have to deal with later.
The first piece comes in, it's one of the side tables. I have to put it together so no big deal. I'm comfortable with putting together furniture. This one should be nice and easy.
The next pieces were pretty bulky. They were parts of a three piece sectional that formed a shape of a letter "U". Two guys were able to wiggle it in through the front door, no problem.
The ottoman came in with no problems then the second piece of the three piece sectional came in without a hitch.
Now the final piece which was the longest of the three piece sectional, that was a different story. The delivery guys and I tried several ways including removing the front door, attempted (and failed) to remove the picture window to see if it can come in that way, coming in from the basement, and nothing worked. The delivery guys were running late to their next delivery and was thinking about just taking it back but that was not an option for me. We tried to bring it in from the back door and through from the family room, but there were too many corners leading in from the family room that it was just stuck there. I told the delivery guys to just leave it there and I'll figure out a way to get it inside. As long as it's inside the house, that was the main goal that I had to accept and figure out the rest later.
After doing several Google searches, I realized that this issue was not unique to my situation. There are several "furniture doctors" that specialize in old buildings like in NYC where furniture needed to be modified in order to get it inside and out of buildings. I took off a section of the bottom cover to see if there were any screws that I can loosen to help out my situation.
When that approach didn't yield any possible solutions, I tried to muscle the piece in to the house. I didn't care much of the walls at the time since I knew that I will be fixing or painting them in the very near future. This was the most that the piece would make it from the family room to the kitchen.
Here's the view of what's left to fit through from the family room side. I was peeking through the "interior window" from the kitchen.
After having no luck, I pulled it back into the family room and explored further if there's some kind of portion of the couch that I can take apart easily just to make it fit. Unfortunately, everything I can see was either nailed or nailed and glued in place and was not budging without a fight.
I took my loss and focused on the pieces that were able to make it in to the living room. I'm keeping them in boxes and wrapped up in the meantime until I'm done with painting the ceilings and walls. That way, the new furniture wouldn't get any paint drips or splatters on them. I'll refocus on the biggest piece afterwards when I'm ready.
On a good note, furniture is on site and floor coverings are in place. Just need to start taping off sections of the rooms then start painting.
