The floor refinishing project took several days to complete. It was a very labor intensive project that spanned days which made it impossible for myself to do by myself. Specially in the limited time that we had before our lease was up on the apartment. I hired a local contractor to do this project for me and the end result was well worth the expense.
Day 1 (9/23/2013)
Had to wake up early today to meet the contractor and let them in the house before I had to go to work. Had an early guest to check out what was going on.
Soon as they arrived, I gave them the keys and also showed them where the circuit breaker was. They took the circuit breaker face plate off and plugged their power lines direct to the main line. They explained that they needed to do it in order to avoid tripping the circuit breakers all the time.
I thought I can go ahead and drive to work when one of the guys started sanding the floor but the foreman stopped me to stay so I can let him know which color to stain the floor.
Being that I'm color blind and I didn't want to be in trouble with the big boss, I sent her some sample pictures of the stains that the contractor was showing me.
After she gave her blessing on which one she liked, I informed the contractor and confirmed with him that it should be finished in a satin finish and not the one with high gloss. When I came back after work, they were already gone and I saw that the first coat of stain was already in place.
Day 2 (9/24/2013)
On the second day, I stopped by again after work and I'm guessing that they did another round of sanding and second coat of stain. I really couldn't tell since the color looked the same to me. I blame it on my colorblindness.
Day 3 (9/25/2013)
On the third day, I stopped by again after work and noticed that there's a glossy finish to the floor this time around. I actually kind of liked it but I remember the big boss and I decided to go with a satin finish and not high gloss. I reported back to her with the pictures and waited to see what the next couple of days would bring.
Day 4 (9/26/2013)
My visit after work on Day 4, I was starting to get a little worried. The big boss confirmed that she still wanted a satin finish and what I walked in to was still pretty glossy to me. I believe the contractor told me that they usually sand the floor every morning to smooth out the stain and then reapply another coat and this coat was still glossy.
Day 5 (9/27/2013)
Finally on Day 5, I walked in after work and the satin finish was there. It was consistent all around and the previous damages on the floor didn't seem to exist at all.
Checked the bedrooms to make sure it was consistent all around. I couldn't do a walk through on the previous days because the stain still felt tacky and I didn't want to leave foot tracks all over and mess up the job.
Even the attic stairs looked great. Consistent color and finish all around all the way up to the top tread.
So far, we're off to a great start. Definitely a big help to get the floors done before moving in the furniture. I couldn't imagine doing a multi-day job like this with furniture already in the house. Next step is to protect the floor with covering and start painting the ceilings and walls.
